An Early Taste of Spring

It seems most of us have had enough of winter at this point. It’s been extremely cold, snowy, wet, messy. And it goes on! However… We’ve got some heart-opening and spirited Spring in bloom already here at Source Centre. Have you been by lately to see the beautiful photography on display by the wonderful and talented Tatyana Xsenya? If not, I invite you over because these photos won’t be up for too much longer. And her gorgeous collection of natural photography from her world travels are just the balm for us right now (short of a visit to these warmer climates!). I’ve spent a couple of months with these images and I’ve been reconsidering which one is my favourite. I thought it was the one titled Athabasca Falls in Morning Light where she captured the beauty and the rush of these majestic falls. Wow! The other day during a Reiki treatment in our ‘Sunshine Room’, however, I found myself mesmerized by an incredible closeup piece of the rib of a Titan Arum. What’s a Titan Arum, you ask? It’s an extraordinary flower that can weigh up to 200lbs and is known to bloom for 24 hours once every decade. Tatyana has provided wonderful descriptions for each room so you can learn more about these exquisite pieces. So come over and take a tour, dive into the colour and the magnificence and escape the winter blues. Oh, and for a really easy going price, you can even take home your favourite piece. Feeling sleepy all the time? Lacking energy? In a never-ending low mood? Winter can be really depressing… but maybe only if you want it to be. Coming from a tropical country in December 2011, I landed in Canada for the first time. I got off the airplane and first thought: “Did someone forget to turn off the AC or am I actually outside?” Having never experienced such cold weather before, my first months in this country were really tough both physically and mentally. I became lazy, depressed, and a homebody that was trying to escape the cold as much as she could. I did not want to do anything but stay warm at home. For a while, there were only two things that could get me out: school and work, nothing else! That summer, I spent time in the great outdoors with friends and family. It was so great that it made me realize how much quality time I had wasted sleeping and lazing around. Inspired, I committed to challenge myself and enjoy activities outside for my second winter in Canada. There is still one winter activity I have yet to try: ice-skating! And I am so happy to have my first experience in a few days with Source Centre’s first skating party on Wednesday February 19th at 5:00 pm at Nathan Phillips Square. Avoiding Airport Dietary Disasters Whether you’re traveling for pleasure or business, if you’ve established a healthy diet, the last thing you want to do is ruin it. Unfortunately, airports are a smorgasbord of tasty but unhealthy foods designed to tempt hungry people with little time to spare. When faced with everything from sugary lattes to fresh-baked cinnamon buns, it can be a challenge to resist such indulgence. Fortunately, by taking the proper steps, you can reduce the temptation and maintain your health and figure. Here are some of the ways that you can avoid airport dietary disasters. Eat Before You Leave Going to the airport hungry is a lot like going to the store hungry – it’s not a wise decision. Hunger drives impulsiveness, making you much more likely to eat things you know you shouldn’t. It’s always better to eat before leaving for the airport. If you’re really pressed for time before your trip, consider preparing something the night before. Anything you make at home is virtually guaranteed to be healthier and more satisfying than anything you’ll find at airport restaurants. Bring Your Own Food If you’re on a long-haul flight, you’re probably going to get hungry at some point. While most airlines provide meals and snacks for such trips, they’re not usually the healthiest fare. For this reason, it’s recommended that you bring your own foods that fit your dietary needs and preferences. Sandwiches, salads, cereal bars, nuts, dried or fresh fruit, jerky and yogurt are all fantastic options. Do Your Homework Once you’ve found out which airport you’ll be departing from, do a search online to see what kinds of restaurants it harbors. Also learn about the restaurants and hotels in the nearby area. You never know when you are going to be stuck over night on a layover. I had a flight cancelled recently while I was in Boston after a Red Sox game and thought I was in a trouble. I did a quick search and found a great list of hotels and restaurants in Boston that could cater to the health conscious. Researching everything is extremely important.  By doing this, you’ll be better able to gauge the availability of health-conscious menu items. Steer clear of places serving junk foods, barbecue, fried foods and other health nightmares. You’re much better off with places that serve Mediterranean fare, salads, soups and lean meats. Drink Plenty of Water Many people don’t realize that thirst can be mistaken for hunger, and they eat needlessly as a result. Meanwhile, what your body really wants is water, so it’s important that you stay properly hydrated on your trip. Unfortunately, recent security measures forbid you from bringing more than three ounces of liquid through the terminal gates. To make matters worse, you can expect to pay an obscene amount of money for a bottle of water once you’re on the plane. That said, there is one way around this problem. Simply bring an empty bottle and fill it in the restroom or from a water fountain once you’ve gone through security. Get Some Exercise Sitting around waiting for your flight can drive you to eat out of boredom, which is the worst dietary mistake you can make. California Trippin’

I greeted the fall season in California this year. Yes! California! I went to do an intensive training for a practice I’m newly unrolling in November at Source Centre called the Art of Feminine Presence (more on that in a future post) and then I spent a couple of days in West L.A., a place called Venice Beach. I am always so enriched by, and grateful for, opportunities to explore myself in different environments. I spent many hours by the Pacific ocean just absorbing her roaring beating heart…letting the sun stroke my skin (this is a different sun, I tell you)…drinking in the salty air…taking in the extraordinary beauty of the horizon and the hills and the sky. I took precious time feeling my feelings and grounding my energy. Whenever I go somewhere I can come back and write a novel of my experiences, the details, and the way I felt and the things that opened up and transformed for me. It’s truly one of the gifts of our time to be able to visit faraway places with relative ease and expense. I stayed at the most beautiful spot, made some new friends and had an amazing time exploring myself through time and space in unfamiliar terrain. And I came back a different person than I was when I left. In truth, don’t we go to bed each night a different person than the one who awoke that morning? What’s our degree of awareness around it? Healthy Travels

Want to enjoy the sightseeing, the company with fellow travelers, and the local cuisine while staying healthy along the way? I found myself in this very scenario while travelling to Beijing in October 2012 (and wrote about it on my previous blog post here). Beijing is an amazing place full of countless opportunities for touring, shopping and enjoying the local food and culture. There’s the Great Wall of China, numerous palaces and tombs of emperors and empresses past, Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City and more. For the destinations that were nearby, the commute was swift and effortless. The destinations that were further off, however, were much more of a challenge and needed a little more attention.  Add the 12 hour flights to and from Beijing, and you can really imagine what impact such a vacation could have on well-being! Staying healthy in Beijing was easy, simple and rewarding. The key was to continue practicing my daily healthy habits and modify them to fit the circumstances. Here’s are 3 ways I stayed healthy during my week-long trip through Beijing:   Regular Network Spinal Care before and after the trip Drs. Allison, Anita, and I all benefit from getting regular Network Spinal Care. My body-mind has strategies to stay calm and connected, and to practice healthy travel habits needed by my body.   Yoga during the trip During the trip, I practiced 15-20 minutes of yoga each morning before breakfast. I performed a short routine that includes standing postures and floor poses for strength, endurance and flexibility. Yoga is great for awakening our bodies and for preparing us for our first meal of the day. I find it always helps me clear out my lungs and airways of anything accumulated the day before. It’s also easier for me to be still physically and mentally on long bus trips after moving my joints, breathing deeply and stretching my tissues in yoga. With a bit of practice it can be very easy to do your own yoga practice! Stay tuned for a future article on building a personal yoga practice. In the meantime, our Monday night yoga class (click here for schedule) with Rupel Pandya is a great step to having more yoga in your life.   Make healthier food choices Beijing is brimming with food choices that span the entire spectrum of healthy nutrition. I looked for plant-based whole foods wherever possible – vegetables, fruits, legumes and grains and leaned towards dishes that were lightly seasoned and oiled (or even better unseasoned and un-oiled). That meant I was enjoying dishes such as millet congee, freshly made unsweetened hot soy milk, stir-fried vegetables and tofu, and plain white rice. On some days, I’d eat a meal of simply watermelon, Chinese Hami Gold melons, Chinese fresh dates, and mandarins / clementines. Eating whole foods helped me maintain steady energy levels and regular elimination. It also helped me ensure I was getting all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are so abundant in plant-based foods.   Staying active, eating well and getting regular Network Spinal Care are 3 of the ways I got the most out...
