Just 7 Minutes a Day

Is getting out of the house in the freezing weather as hard for you as it is for me? Even living in a warm and cozy home, I still experience ever-freezing hands and feet. This winter, one thing did the trick for me: exercise! While most of us are health-conscious, it can be tough to squeeze time (and be motivated) for a workout. The solution may be quicker than we think. In reports like “High-Intensity Circuit Training Using Body Weight: Maximum Results With Minimal Investment”,  high intensity circuit training can deliver many health benefits in quickly and with no special equipment. It takes only 7 minutes (feel free to do more cycles!), a chair and a bit of space with an empty wall. You can conveniently find free apps on iOS, Google Play, Windows, or even your Pebble Watch to time your routine. There is also a website for non-smartphone users! This 7-minute workout did magic for me this winter, how about you? How are you staying warm and fit this winter? Share your thoughts below! -Helane Tweet...

New Year Resolutions: Achieve Your Goals for 2014

This New Year it seems that, yet again, everyone is making resolutions. Do you have a resolution for 2014 but aren’t sure how to see it through? Choosing a method or strategy for reaching your goals can be overwhelming.  Not to worry, though, Source Centre is here to help you achieve your New Year’s resolutions. Read on for a list of common New Year resolutions, and what Source Centre can do to help you accomplish your goals for 2014. Lose Weight and Get Fit As the most common New Year resolution, the commitment to getting fit is the reason why it is impossible to snag a treadmill at the gym the first few months of the year. Everyone is there with the same goal, trying to lose weight and get into shape. Source Centre would like to offer other options besides the gym, where you don’t have to fight over gym equipment or a space to lay down your mat. Join us at Source Centre every Monday night at 7:30pm for Yoga with Leila. Starting January 9th, every Thursday Source Centre will also be hosting a Pilates class with Alwynn Taylor at 8:00am. Quit Smoking Quitting smoking is no easy task, especially after holiday stress. Add in the short dark days of winter, and the constant cold, and quitting smoking may seem virtually impossible. However, studies have shown that chiropractic therapy can help dissolve addiction. Brain function relies on normal structural integrity and joint movement in the spine. An abnormal position or movement of spinal vertebra can lead to nerve interference, distorting communication between the spinal cord and brain. Known as “vertebral subluxation,” it is this disruption between the brain and the spinal cord that chiropractic work focuses on. These subluxations interfere with the brain’s reward system, resulting in the need for an individual to escape undesirable feelings such as withdrawal from nicotine. At Source Centre our chiropractors Dr. Leo Quan and Dr. Allison Barriscale can help you quit smoking by restoring your spine and inner reward system to it’s full functioning state. Eat Healthier and Diet This New Year resolution has the potential to actually do your body more harm than good. It is important not to confuse eating healthier with eating less, but rather eating more nutritious foods and less empty calories with minimal nutritional value. Whether your desire to eat healthier stems from wanting to lose weight, gain weight, reduce disease risk, or live with a food allergy, our nutrition services can provide the support you need to successfully accomplish your New Year resolution. For nutritional counseling, contact Nutritionist, Fumie Yamaguchi , or our Naturopath, Tara Andresen. Get More Sleep Getting enough sleep is an essential part of keeping your body healthy. Not only is sleep crucial for brain function and memory consolidation, but lack of sleep can lead to undesired weight gain. How can Source Centre help? Somato Respiratory Integration (SRI) connects the body’s inner rhythms with focused attention, gentle breath, movement and touch. By expanding your body awareness you can help your body relax, helping you not only to fall asleep, but to also sleep more deeply. Still not quite sure what SRI is? Join Source Centre January 15th, January 29th, and February 13th for introductory workshops to SRI. Be Less Stressed Reducing your stress level goes hand-in-hand with getting more sleep. If your goal is to be less stressed in 2014, Source Centre has a variety of services that can help you achieve your objective. Need a stress management plan? Source Centre will be hosting a Stress Management workshopon January 15th at 7:30pm....

Year of the Snake- Year of the Spleen

Year of the Snake- Year of the Spleen

(Image: “Snake In Green Nature” by SweetCrisis/ FreeDigitalPhotos.net) Many Chinese communities all over the world celebrated the Chinese New Year this week and welcomed the year of the snake. A short brief: According to ancient Chinese philosophy, there are two main cycles in nature representing the order of the universe. The first is a cycle of 10 (“stem”) and the second, a cycle of 12 (“branch”). Each branch can be viewed in 3 different perspectives: 2 hours of the day (24 hours divided by 12 branches). 12 months of the year (lunar months). 12 years great cycle. Within the great 12 year cycle, every year is represented by a sign that symbolizes the characteristic of that year, much like the famous zodiac known in the west. Each branch, in addition to its correspondence to an animal, has a deep relationship with an organ in the body. It is important to keep in mind that an “organ” in Chinese Medicine is a wider term than it is in Western Medicine: there is the physical organ and physical function, and it also includes its meridian, and its emotional and spiritual functions. The “Organ” belonging to the year of the snake is the Spleen. The main role of the spleen is to control everything that has to do with digestion. On the physical level it is food and fluids but consider also the digestion of data, thoughts, and information. Why snake? The snake represents a very strong digestive system. So strong that it can digest a prey that was swallowed whole. This year, therefore, the spleen is especially active. It means that it has the potential to be in its full manifestation and strength if we take good care of it. Conversely, it means that it can be easily injured and harmed if we don’t treat it appropriately. So how can we help the spleen this year? As the master of digestion the spleen likes a variety of foods. A diverse and colourful menu, rich with many nutrients will nourish and support the spleen. The one exception are carbohydrates. It is important to monitor the quantity and quality of these to ensure the spleen is “happy” and is not harmed. The spleen is also sensitive to cold foods like dairy products, and uncooked food straight from the fridge. Raw fruits and vegetables should be eaten at room temperature. Ice creams and ice cold drinks should be eliminated!! All of these are truths in every year but more so in a snake/ spleen year. On the mental/ emotional level it is important to keep a relaxed lifestyle as much as possible. The spleen is prone to harm from overthinking and too many worries. Practicing meditation, qi-gong, yoga or any meditative activity on a regular basis will support the spleen. Even things like guilt and avoiding responsibilities can harm the spleen so this year is a great time to take action and ownership in our lives. Regular Chinese Medicine treatments, Acupuncture and herbal remedies designed to nourish the spleen are also highly recommended. Wonder how your spleen is doing? Signs for injured or deficient spleen include: • Gastrointestinal symptoms like IBS, diarrhea, constipation, nausea and stomachaches. • Food allergies and intolerance • Menstrual disorders • Tendencies to bruise easily, nosebleeds, bleeding gums • Hemorrhoids • Collapsed organ/tissues • Severe conditions like anemia and immunity and autoimmunity diseases If any of the above conditions are familiar with you and you wish to address them, please contact us by phone or email. Together we will have a great, healthy and successful year of the snake! Yuval...

Celebrate Life

(Image: Trees_and_Shrubs_g75-Sunbeam_In_The_Forest / FreeDigitalPhotos.net) As we kick off a fresh new year and make new resolutions after all the holiday parties of 2012 have come to an end, let’s take a moment to ponder and celebrate this wonderful thing called life. Life, ah yes, a word to describe our vibrancy, motivations, births, deaths, daily happenings and special occasions.  A daydreamer myself, I often have fleeting thoughts on the purpose of life that captivate me for seconds before my mind is entranced by other thoughts… So what do you want from this life?  Are you living to your full potential?  Are you taking time to enjoy the wonders of nature?  Are you thankful for all the blessings you have?  Are you taking care of your body like a temple?  Are you striving for your goals and dreams?  Do you love what you do?  Are you doing something for YOU every single day?   Life is so short.  Enjoy every moment.  Keep your head up and smile bright. And always, always remember to express your love for others and especially love for yourself!   Wishing you a very happy, extraordinarily captivating and amazing new year ahead. January Fitness Challenge: Zumba!

[Image: photostock/freedigitalimages.net] With the start of a new year, it is a great time for some health and wellness resolutions!  Our team at Source Centre has decided to do a monthly fitness challenge where we choose a specific workout and try to incorporate that activity into our schedules as many times as we can.  For our January challenge, we are going to start with Zumba fitness. Zumba is a Latin-inspired, exhilarating, easy-to-follow, calorie-burning, dance fitness-party™. It blends vibrant international music with catchy steps to form a ‘fitness-party’ that’s moving millions of people towards joy and health.  Zumba began in 2001, and has since grown to become the world’s largest dance-fitness program with people of all shapes, sizes and ages participating. Zumba has its origins in Colombia, where a fitness instructor named Alberto Perez was in a rush to teach an aerobics class and forgot his usual music. Instead, he improvised by using his own mix of music that he had in his backpack (salsa and merengue). Spontaneously he created a new kind of dance-fitness, one that focused on letting the music move you (instead of counting reps over the music). An electrifying energy filled the room and people couldn’t stop smiling. His class loved it! On that day, a new fitness concept was born, the Zumba® fitness-party. Zumba is taught in gyms and studios all over the world to numerous fitness enthusiasts. It recently even became offered in the video gaming platform! As the Zumba program continues to evolve, its growth has deepened in the commitment to providing accessible fitness to all, with the pure joy of a party. The Zumba goal is to spread the philosophy of health and happiness and of loving everything you do, especially your workout.  We here at Source Centre want to share that philosophy too! To find a Zumba class near you, check the following website for locations:  http://www.zumba.com/en-US/parties/search/ We will be planning a day to do a Zumba class together, so come join us!  We will keep you...
