About Maintenance

Therefore, when one is “healthy” there is no reason to go to the doctor. It’s only when one finds one’s self “unhealthy”, that it’s time to go find a cure, see a doctor, take medication(s), do whatever will “fix” the problem. This to many of us is the normal way of things. On the other hand, we’re told that we must have an anti-virus installed on the computer and always have it backed-up; we’ve got to change the filter in the furnace and regularly change the oil in the car. In these examples, we’re exhorted not to wait for something to get broken because it will cost us twice as much. Quite frankly, I don’t understand the logic! When we’re talking about our belongings we need to be proactive but not when it’s about our bodies and our health and wellbeing? Maintaining good health in our bodies is something we all can and need to do. It’s also something we ourselves can take the initiative on through the choices we make. What we put in – what and how much we eat and at what times – and what we put on our body. It’s vital to be physically active, to listen to our body’s limits, to ensure we’re getting enough sleep. These are only a few examples of how our personal actions can benefit our health. That being said, there are many therapeutic modalities out there to assist us in achieving and maintaining great health. Many of us are aware of the great benefits of Chinese Medicine in treating a wide variety of conditions, from pain relief to dealing with allergies, emotional stress, anxiety, hormonal imbalances, infertility, and much more. But did you know that, above all else, Chinese Medicine is a preventative medicine? Chinese Medicine as a whole, and especially the “Stems & Branches” method, is designed to be a preventative type of medicine, first and foremost. The ancient Chinese actually developed different techniques to prevent illness and maintain health, that differ from those used to treat a disease.  In the “NEI JING”- the main classic of Chinese Medicine – it is said that a good doctor will get rid of the symptoms and relieve the patient’s suffering. A great doctor will treat the root of the illness and prevent its recurrence. A real master, however, will identify the illness (by pulse diagnosis) before it manifests in the physical body and prevent it from occurring at all. Also consider, in this system the doctor only is paid as long as the patient stays healthy. When someone is sick or suffers from disease, the treatment is free! In our era where healthcare is so costly, think of how wonderful it would be if this was still the way we operated. So my advice to you is to take an active role in your health.  Live right. Eat right. Sleep right. Find the kind of physical activity that fits who you are and allows you to experience joy. And yes, you can use Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture to make sure you stay happy and healthy. Don’t wait for something to get broken. The Power of Our Thoughts

(Image by audfriday13 / FreeDigitalPhotos.net) I’m sure you’ve probably heard about the power of positive thoughts and how they can attract the things we wish for in our lives.  It definitely seems like a great idea to turn our thoughts into motivators and harness them as good energy to fuel our days.  But it can sometimes feel like a challenge, especially when the weather is gray or things are not going our way.  What can we do when we are are going through these times and it’s hard to see the brighter side of things? A daily meditation ritual has been show to focus our minds and soothe our souls.  Try these beginner meditation tips. The more regular that you are with a meditation practice, the greater the effects and ability to create positive thinking.  I myself have experienced this.  I sit down every morning for 5-10 minutes (or more) on my little meditation cushion and observe my thoughts.  I let my mind be still.  It is amazing how I feel starting my day on a calm tone.  I really notice the difference if for some reason I don’t get a chance to do my morning meditation.  My day feels a bit off and more nervous energy can set in.  When this happens on the rare occasion, I remember to stop and take a few deep breaths to re-balance and allow myself to function at a more tranquil frequency.  My mom told me something so insightful and lovely the other day during a phone conversation. She relayed this great analogy of how every one of us has a small lighted flame deep within us and the way to nourish this flame is with positive thoughts that act like pouring oil onto the flame.  Just picturing that image in my head helped me to see how powerful good thoughts can be.  So to generate some positive vibes and thoughts, try meditating. Here’s a simple exercise from Gaiam Life to help you get started and it takes  less than  five minutes, I promise! How to meditate: Simple meditation for beginners This meditation exercise is an excellent introduction. 1. Sit or lie comfortably.  2. Close your eyes. 3. Make no effort to control the breath; simply breathe naturally. 4. Focus your attention on the breath and on how the body moves with each inhalation and exhalation. Notice the movement of your body as you breathe. Observe your chest, shoulders, rib cage and belly. Make no effort to control your breath; simply focus your attention. If your mind wanders, simply return your focus back to your breath. Preparing for a Refresh

(Image: ‘fresh fruit’ by adamr / FreeDigitalPhotos.net) There was a time a few years ago when I was really keen on detoxes and explored and tried all sorts. This has been less so in recent times. To be honest, there’s a part of me that views a detox as a deprivation and I fear withdrawal symptoms – not just headaches, potential nausea and general fatigue, but even angst and restlessness at not allowing myself to reach out for my old standbys of comfort. This April, I’m going to give it another go alongside my Source community. It’s springtime, a natural time to clean out and we’re taking a new approach. No deprivation model here, it’s actually about nourishment and there’s a lot of information available in-office and on the web, including some great talks we’re hosting in April. In the meantime, I’d love to share my approach on getting started. So first, I like (need) to take a few weeks to prepare, and I pick a time period where my schedule is relatively light or where there aren’t too many outings planned. For us, this is going to be the week of April 15th. I begin to prepare myself mentally with the gentle reminders that we (the whole mind-body-spirit that composes this ‘Lana’ thing) are going to be undergoing a detox. This is a voluntary thing and the result is going to be positive. This is something we all want and it is a time-limited thing. We can totally do this. I also create some intentions around what I would like to achieve – this will consist of physical intentions (like sleep better, feel more energized, improve my skin’s glow, and sure, drop a few pounds 😛 ) and also something more spiritual & emotional (I would like to gain more peace, feel more love, and gain greater clarity around decision-making). The next piece is some practical planning around what I’m going to need. What is the detox itself going to consist of? What are the foods and equipment I’m going to need to have in place to make this work? Generally for me, I know that I need to have food and plans set for the next 2 days ahead; this also means setting aside time in my calendar every day (or other) to grocery shop and plan for the 2 days after that. And so on for the duration of the cleanse. Primarily, I will eat lots of raw food, say good bye to sugar, gluten, dairy, coffee, all fried and processed foods and add lots of water, herbal teas, seaweed, and supplements. Here I also consider my Achilles foods – coffee, chocolate (and sweets in general) and bread. What is the game plan for dealing with these cravings? In my nourishing cleanse, I’m going to drink green tea so that will provide me with a caffeine fix but do it with healthy antioxidant goodness (In most, if not every cleanse, we eliminate caffeine). For my sweet tooth, I’ll turn to fruit or a banana smoothie. For bread, I may just try out a gluten-free bread. Depending on the type of detox you take on, there may be satisfying ways of taking the sting out. The truth is, there is a lot of healthy culinary satisfaction available that I’m not even aware of. The Intelligence Within

What happens when you have a gut feeling about something and you do not listen to what your body is trying to tell you? What happens when you do listen? I find when I can follow my gut, or my heart, that life flows with ease and good things come to me. In Chiropractic Philosophy one of our main tenets is that in each one of us there is an innate intelligence governing all function within our bodies and sending us messages to guide us in our lives. These “gut feelings” that we have are messages sent to us by our innate intelligence which is trying to get us to listen. In our society, due to the large volumes of information we deal with on a daily basis, we often spend a lot of time in our heads processing and analyzing our situation. We use our educated mind to make choices for ourselves and decide the paths we are going to take in our minds based on our previous life experience. Our educated mind was a blank slate when we were born and we have been accumulating knowledge and information to “educate” ourselves and survive in our lives. Our educated mind is finite and shaped by our personal experiences. On the other hand, our innate mind, is infinite and all knowing. When we can bypass our educated mind to be quiet and listen to our innate intelligence it will reveal the wisdom to us and guide us in our lives. This is not an easy task however, and it is a lifelong journey for those who choose. However, simply making the choice to become aware of your innate intelligence will make a profound difference in your ability to hear what it has to say. How can you connect more deeply to your innate intelligence? The first step is to become aware of your present state? So how do you know if you are connected to your innate intelligence, or to your heart? Here are 3 different areas to look at to help you know if you are connected. 1) How are you feeling?At any time you can check in to your emotional state. It is simple, when you are experiencing positive, joyful emotions, you know you are connected. If you are feeling negative, unhappy emotions, then you know you are not connected. 2) How are your energy levels?When your energy levels are abundant you are connected; when you have low energy you are not connected and are not following your heart. 3) What kind of language are you using?The type of language you are using is a reflection of your internal state. Using words like “I choose to…”, “I love to…”, “I want to…”, are signs that you are connected and doing things that come from your innate intelligence and are an expression of who you are. Words like “I have to…”, “I should…”, and “I need to…” are less connected expressions that imply that you are doing things that are not coming from your personal self-expression. These are all things that you can be aware of throughout your day and check in on a regular basis. Year of the Snake- Year of the Spleen

A short brief: According to ancient Chinese philosophy, there are two main cycles in nature representing the order of the universe. The first is a cycle of 10 (“stem”) and the second, a cycle of 12 (“branch”). Each branch can be viewed in 3 different perspectives: 2 hours of the day (24 hours divided by 12 branches). 12 months of the year (lunar months). 12 years great cycle. Within the great 12 year cycle, every year is represented by a sign that symbolizes the characteristic of that year, much like the famous zodiac known in the west. Each branch, in addition to its correspondence to an animal, has a deep relationship with an organ in the body. It is important to keep in mind that an “organ” in Chinese Medicine is a wider term than it is in Western Medicine: there is the physical organ and physical function, and it also includes its meridian, and its emotional and spiritual functions. The “Organ” belonging to the year of the snake is the Spleen. The main role of the spleen is to control everything that has to do with digestion. On the physical level it is food and fluids but consider also the digestion of data, thoughts, and information. Why snake? The snake represents a very strong digestive system. So strong that it can digest a prey that was swallowed whole. This year, therefore, the spleen is especially active. It means that it has the potential to be in its full manifestation and strength if we take good care of it. Conversely, it means that it can be easily injured and harmed if we don’t treat it appropriately. So how can we help the spleen this year? As the master of digestion the spleen likes a variety of foods. A diverse and colourful menu, rich with many nutrients will nourish and support the spleen. The one exception are carbohydrates. It is important to monitor the quantity and quality of these to ensure the spleen is “happy” and is not harmed. The spleen is also sensitive to cold foods like dairy products, and uncooked food straight from the fridge. Raw fruits and vegetables should be eaten at room temperature. Ice creams and ice cold drinks should be eliminated!! All of these are truths in every year but more so in a snake/ spleen year. On the mental/ emotional level it is important to keep a relaxed lifestyle as much as possible. The spleen is prone to harm from overthinking and too many worries. Practicing meditation, qi-gong, yoga or any meditative activity on a regular basis will support the spleen. Even things like guilt and avoiding responsibilities can harm the spleen so this year is a great time to take action and ownership in our lives. Regular Chinese Medicine treatments, Acupuncture and herbal remedies designed to nourish the spleen are also highly recommended. Wonder how your spleen is doing?
