Fibroids – Health Topic of the Month

Following a July 2015 radio piece about the risks of minimally invasive fibroid surgery on CBC’s The Current, we asked the health team at Source Centre for their opinion on dealing with uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are usually non-cancerous growths in the uterus that are usually caused by hormonal imbalance. Uterine fibroids can be detected during pelvic exams; only larger growths can be detected by pelvic ultrasound. Symptoms can include heavy menstrual bleeding, spotting between cycles, and pelvic pain or pressure. Interested to learn more? Naturopathic treatment focuses on improving estrogen clearance which can work to improve fibroid symptoms. Treatment includes diet changes as well as nutrient and herbal supplementation. Diindolylmethane (DIM) supplement is a good example of a naturally occurring phytonutrient that improves estrogen metabolism.   Divya Yadava, Registered Holistic Nutritionist Uterine fibroids are benign tumors in the uterus that are usually caused by too much estrogen in the body. As a nutritionist, my approach would be to eat foods that can help reduce estrogen. By eating a diet rich in soluble fibre, probiotics, cruciferous vegetables and liver-supportive foods you can help your body clear excess estrogen naturally. My favourite estrogen-busting meal would be a fresh kale salad with roasted beets and crunchy almonds topped with a garlic-hummus dressing, served with a protein of your choice. As a holistic nutritionist, I can create a program that combines customized diet and lifestyle recommendations to help you banish excess estrogen and prevent future fibroids.   Yuval Blum, Acupuncturist Uterine fibroids are known as ZHENG XIA in ancient Chinese medical texts. Fibroids may cause abdominal pain, swelling, and bleeding, yet require completely different acupuncture treatments because each fibroid stems from a unique cause. For example, I often find that an imbalance of the liver organ and its meridian can manifest as fibroids, so performing acupuncture along this meridian can help balance the energy flow through the uterus, which is on the same meridian. Acupuncture has helped many of my patients strengthen the liver, reduce estrogen, and shrink the fibroids.   Lana Kevic, Art of Feminine Presence, Womb Blessing Signs of dis-ease or imbalance appear in a person’s energy field long before manifesting in the physical body. When fibroids appear in a woman’s reproductive system, variations in the energetic field can cause, or be said to result from blockages in creative expression. Our desires and vision are suppressed, and result in physical growths in the centre and birthplace of our creativity. Energy work can offer a subtle and powerful path towards healing.   Dr. Leo Quan, Network Chiropractor When we’re under prolonged stress – physical, emotional, mental, or environmental – we can easily cause a state of disconnection between brain and body. When there’s a disconnect with the uterus, it can lose its ability to repair and regenerate, as well as fend off growths like fibroids. A healthy fibroid-free uterus is a uterus that is connected to the nervous system. Network Chiropractic adjustments to the spine can stimulate the nervous system to grow new connections to the uterus, helping it to heal from fibroids.   Source Centre is pleased to bring you the Health Topic of the Month.
