Just 7 Minutes a Day

Is getting out of the house in the freezing weather as hard for you as it is for me? Even living in a warm and cozy home, I still experience ever-freezing hands and feet. This winter, one thing did the trick for me: exercise! While most of us are health-conscious, it can be tough to squeeze time (and be motivated) for a workout. The solution may be quicker than we think. In reports like “High-Intensity Circuit Training Using Body Weight: Maximum Results With Minimal Investment”,  high intensity circuit training can deliver many health benefits in quickly and with no special equipment. It takes only 7 minutes (feel free to do more cycles!), a chair and a bit of space with an empty wall. You can conveniently find free apps on iOS, Google Play, Windows, or even your Pebble Watch to time your routine. There is also a website for non-smartphone users! This 7-minute workout did magic for me this winter, how about you? How are you staying warm and fit this winter? Share your thoughts below! -Helane Tweet...

Celebrate Life

(Image: Trees_and_Shrubs_g75-Sunbeam_In_The_Forest / FreeDigitalPhotos.net) As we kick off a fresh new year and make new resolutions after all the holiday parties of 2012 have come to an end, let’s take a moment to ponder and celebrate this wonderful thing called life. Life, ah yes, a word to describe our vibrancy, motivations, births, deaths, daily happenings and special occasions.  A daydreamer myself, I often have fleeting thoughts on the purpose of life that captivate me for seconds before my mind is entranced by other thoughts… So what do you want from this life?  Are you living to your full potential?  Are you taking time to enjoy the wonders of nature?  Are you thankful for all the blessings you have?  Are you taking care of your body like a temple?  Are you striving for your goals and dreams?  Do you love what you do?  Are you doing something for YOU every single day?   Life is so short.  Enjoy every moment.  Keep your head up and smile bright. And always, always remember to express your love for others and especially love for yourself!   Wishing you a very happy, extraordinarily captivating and amazing new year ahead. Yours in health, Dr. Anita Rajan p.s. Need some help with your New Year’s or Life resolutions?  We’d love to help you get started on those here at Source Centre...

Sunshine Breaks

Sunshine Breaks

Winter is upon us and as the evening dusk descends earlier, it is imperative that we take what I like to call ‘sunshine breaks.’  On the smallest scale, my daily sunshine break is taking a midday walk outside, enjoying a warm dose of afternoon sun as it warms the earth.  It is very important to have exposure to sunlight as it affects the production of vitamin D and its role of helping to absorb calcium in the body.  The combination of fresh air, break from work, and daylight sun (even if it’s just for ten to fifteen minutes) can help provide our bodies with a subtle boost!    Mid-winter mini sunshine breaks are good too, especially post-holiday season.  Going away for a weekend and getting a hit of sun can be very refreshing and good for the soul.  Of course if you can take a fuller, longer vacation away, that’s even better!  Being immersed in sunshine can lift spirits, cause feelings of rejuvenation and allow us to get away from the everyday routine.  It can provide us with a sunny escape to feel like we’ve been gone away for a long time, only to be welcomed back happily to our daily lives.   So go ahead, take your Sunshine Break!   [Image...

Dr. Leo’s October 2012 Beijing Trip

Dr. Leo’s October 2012 Beijing Trip

Months ago, the idea was hatched for my family and I to see some of Beijing’s biggest attractions. The circumstances were perfect. I hadn’t vacationed with my family in ages. Beijing’s sandstorm and summer seasons had long passed. The $99 dollar, 7-day, group tour was too good to pass up. I had never seen Beijing and was dying to travel! All I had to do was pay for my flight and gratuity to the tour guide and bus driver. I had experience with a previous overseas group-tour and knew what I was signing up for. The daily investment was clear. Early morning wake-up calls. Long bus rides between each point of interest, and, once at each destination, a relatively short visit for photos and walking tour. Three set meals per day. Copious amounts of commentary from the tour guide. Your most relaxing vacation it definitely is not! The reward? Beijing was an amazing guided experience! The highlights were many. A peaceful time with mom and dad. Making friends with my travel mates; a few were especially great company (thanks to Galvin, Cathy, Lily and Mei!), and were incredibly helpful in translating Cantonese and Mandarin for me. Some amazing entertainment watching the Golden Mask Dynasty, great scenery and architecture. and decent food to boot. Climbing the Great Wall was perhaps the most memorable and challenging adventure while in Bejing. Some of the climbs were 45 degrees for minutes on end! As positive as it was, Beijing was also a challenging experience. Beijing traffic made Toronto look silky smooth in comparison. The urban smog was noticeable, and a huge contrast to being up in the mountains. All the hours sitting on an airplane and bus was a breeding ground for tension and stiffness. I was left stiff indeed, and it could have been much worse had I not taken measures to ensure good health. What measures you ask? I’ll share with you on my next blog post! In the meantime, enjoy these pictures that I snapped while touring Beijing.
