Gifts of Life

(Image: Heart Shaped Plumeria Flowers by Witthaya Phonsawat / FreeDigitalPhotos.net) Confession: I’ve never given blood before. In fact, I’m quite squeamish when it came to these sort of things (which is ironic if you know me and my interests). I’ve wanted to give blood, love the idea of sharing a precious resource, giving myself literally and helping others in life and death situations. Because when you think about it, it always is life and death when it comes to blood. But the thought of it has always made me feel faint and slightly nauseated. I had blood drawn once for medical testing and I hated the whole experience. It made me feel weak, weird, swooning. I couldn’t look as it was being done. I swore that far too much blood was drawn and I was left with far too little. This whole thing was not for me, unfortunately. Then in early 2010, my mother was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The doctors told her she would be transfusion dependent for the remainder of her life. Over the course of that summer and early fall, she received a few, regular transfusions. She disliked the process but was extremely grateful for the gift of blood, as we all were because it meant she was still with us. As it turns out, her doctor’s pronouncement was wrong. With the help of a new diet and some care, she began regenerating her own blood again (a story for another post) and lived another year and a half until she passed, peacefully, earlier this year. For me, there were so many things to learn in this time and so many feelings to process. One thing that keeps recurring was the need to contribute, in gratitude, and in honour of mom who wouldn’t have had the extra time she had to revisit old friends and old family, to see her youngest daughter married, to impart love and wisdom to her grandchildren without someone’s (and actually many peoples) selfless gift of blood. So, my nervousness remains but it is a slight thing in the face of my commitment. And nothing would please me more than to have You join me and the others at Source Centre in making a donation of blood in our Partners in Life program. In exchange for your gift, we want to offer you thanks with a gift in return. Please click here for more information on how you can join our program and the gifts that await. With love and...

July Challenge: Fruits & Veggies

(Image: vegetables by Suat Eman / FreeDigitalPhotos.net) It isn’t exactly breaking news that fruits and veggies are good for our health. Or is it? We were recently inspired after a TEDx talk given by Dr. Terry Wahls who overcame Multiple Sclerosis with a diet that included 9 cups of fruits and vegetables per day. Amazing! She had brought an array of produce with her to the talk; the camera shot panning the beautiful colours of berries, peppers, squash and leafy greens set our mouths watering. So of course we thought, let’s all do it! And thus the July challenge was born! Thank you to all who participated. (Don’t you feel amazing?) We hope you continue to eat lots of fruits and veggies. It may sound difficult, but fear not! You don’t need to cut out anything just add! Add all sorts of fruits and veggies with every meal. Some caveats though – keep it fresh, rather than frozen or canned. And no potatoes or corn! That’s it – no deprivation, just great delicious food. Now that we’re in the hottest months of the year, what better time to really start enjoying nature’s perfect food! We’ll be announcing the winners of the July challenge soon, please stay posted. 1st prize: a complimentary initial naturopathic visit with Dr. Tara Andresen (a value of $165) 2nd prize: a complimentary nutritional assessment with Dr. Leo Quan (a value of $80) Like us on Facebook and stay posted on recipes, tips and special Fruit days!… Dr. Terry Wahls’ video that inspired us all is below:...

January Fitness Challenge: Zumba!

January Fitness Challenge: Zumba!

[Image: photostock/freedigitalimages.net] With the start of a new year, it is a great time for some health and wellness resolutions!  Our team at Source Centre has decided to do a monthly fitness challenge where we choose a specific workout and try to incorporate that activity into our schedules as many times as we can.  For our January challenge, we are going to start with Zumba fitness. Zumba is a Latin-inspired, exhilarating, easy-to-follow, calorie-burning, dance fitness-party™. It blends vibrant international music with catchy steps to form a ‘fitness-party’ that’s moving millions of people towards joy and health.  Zumba began in 2001, and has since grown to become the world’s largest dance-fitness program with people of all shapes, sizes and ages participating. Zumba has its origins in Colombia, where a fitness instructor named Alberto Perez was in a rush to teach an aerobics class and forgot his usual music. Instead, he improvised by using his own mix of music that he had in his backpack (salsa and merengue). Spontaneously he created a new kind of dance-fitness, one that focused on letting the music move you (instead of counting reps over the music). An electrifying energy filled the room and people couldn’t stop smiling. His class loved it! On that day, a new fitness concept was born, the Zumba® fitness-party. Zumba is taught in gyms and studios all over the world to numerous fitness enthusiasts. It recently even became offered in the video gaming platform! As the Zumba program continues to evolve, its growth has deepened in the commitment to providing accessible fitness to all, with the pure joy of a party. The Zumba goal is to spread the philosophy of health and happiness and of loving everything you do, especially your workout.  We here at Source Centre want to share that philosophy too! To find a Zumba class near you, check the following website for locations:  http://www.zumba.com/en-US/parties/search/ We will be planning a day to do a Zumba class together, so come join us!  We will keep you...
