A Chiropractor Lowers Blood Pressure, Not Just Pain

A Chiropractor Lowers Blood Pressure, Not Just Pain

Chiropractic has a reputation for treating all things related to the spine. People come to a chiropractor because they know chiropractic can help with their back, neck and shoulder pain. A lot of them even know that a Network Chiropractor uses gentle forces to help them get relief, get moving again and get their lives back. The vast majority of patients get better with Network Chiropractic. Their shoulder and neck pain improves, their back pain disappears. And very often, there are extra added benefits. They’re happier, have more energy, and have fewer coughs and cold. Are these added benefits simply an accident or placebo? The benefits to overall health and well-being are real and come from chiropractic care. A 2007 study from the Journal of Human Hypertension – that’s where the experts on high blood pressure hang out – looked for the connection between chiropractic and lowering blood pressure. The researchers tested low-force chiropractic against a placebo chiropractic treatment and measured blood pressure. The people who were tested had no back or neck pain. Does a chiropractor help with blood pressure? Yes, absolutely! You don’t need to have back pain, neck pain, or pain of any kind to benefit from a chiropractor. People who received a low-force chiropractic treatment lowered their blood pressure on average by 17 points systolic (the higher of the 2 numbers) and 10 points diastolic (the lower of the 2). For someone with hypertension (140/90 mmHg), this is enough to lower blood pressure back to a healthy range. To put this in perspective, it would take drug therapy using 2 prescription medications combined to lower your blood pressure by the same amount. Chiropractic lowers your blood pressure. No side-effects and no need to have pain beforehand. What so many people knew all along is now proven by the research. A chiropractor is not just for pain and alignment, but for your overall health and well-being. Yours in health, Dr....

Depression and Anxiety Improved with a Chiropractor

Depression and Anxiety Improved with a Chiropractor

Tis the season for gift giving and merry making and for many, the most stressful time of year. From the festive obligations to the change in temperature and daylight hours, the season can leave many feeling anxious and depressed. And if you already suffer from either of these during the brighter and warmer months, then winter can be a very overwhelming time. Each year, 1 in 5 Canadians experiences a mental health or addiction problem.[1] Over the years, many patients have shared with me their experiences of depression and anxiety, and they can vary dramatically. I’ve been told stories of tension, decreased mood, low appetite, sweaty palms, sleep trouble, fatigue, mental fogginess, worry and more. Fortunately, researchers have found that chiropractic can help. A 1997 study of 2818 patients receiving Network chiropractic showed that treatments helped to increase mental and emotional health, decrease stress and improve life enjoyment.[2] A 2013 study on chiropractic, depression and anxiety showed that chiropractic significantly decreased nervousness, worry, irritability, fear, hopelessness and fatigue. It found improvements to sleep, energy, self-esteem, concentration and life enjoyment. [3] How can a chiropractor improve anxiety and depression? Spinal misalignments can put pressure on your nerve system and cause changes in the way you think and feel. With pressure on the nerve system, communication between the mind and body is disrupted, even cut off. Your nerve system is made of nerves and nerve cells that are much like the electrical wiring, circuit breakers and fuses in your home and office. Imagine if the circuit breakers kept tripping off and shutting off the power? If the power was cut to your body, how healthy could you be? When the spine is misaligned, it damages and disrupts the nerve system, just like a circuit breaker constantly tripping off. It blocks the transmission of information between the body and mind. By realigning the spine and taking the pressure off the nerves, you improve your internal connection and ultimately your health. Depression and anxiety affect so many of us. Ask a chiropractor about how chiropractic can help. Call the centre today to book an appointment.   Yours in health, Dr. Leo     [1] Smetanin et al (2011). The life and economic impact of major mental illnesses in Canada: 2011-2041 [2] Blanks, R. What is the Difference Between Sprains and Strains?

What is the Difference Between Sprains and Strains?

It’s about that time where a lot of us emerge from hibernation and get back into shape. Maybe you have have already brought out the bicycle for the first ride of the season? Or started some house cleaning, decluttering or home improvements? How many of you have started hitting the gym or joined a sports league? As we get active again, we sometimes will overdo it and get injured. I’m a shining example of this having played my first volleyball game after a very long break from the sport. I had so much fun, I played hard like it was playoff season. Over the next 2 days, I paid the price with many body aches and pains. Some of you may have already experienced this, yes? Maybe you’ve been wondering if there’s an easy way to distinguish between different injuries. For example, is it actually a muscle in pain or something else?  What does a chiropractor mean when they say a strain or a sprain, and how is that different than a pull or a tear? What’s the chiropractor’s perspective on this? While a chiropractor knows best if you’re dealing with a strain or a sprain, there are some simple things to know. A strain is an injury of a muscle or the tendon that attaches a muscle to the bone. This is usually the same as saying a pull or a tear. In reality a strain involves varying degrees of tearing of the tissues (microscopic, a partial tear of some of the fibres, or a full tear across all the fibres). A sprain is an injury to the ligaments that attach bones to bone. It can also be an injury to a joint between two bones. Both sprains and strains can feel similar so usually some additional checks by a chiropractor are needed to know if it’s a muscle, tendon, ligament or joint that is injured – or a combination. Do you have any questions about your injury? Or sprains and strains in general? Please chat with me on Twitter or Facebook! Yours in health, Dr. Leo The chiropractor without the...

How This Chiropractor Helps with Pain: Getting to the Source

How This Chiropractor Helps with Pain: Getting to the Source

As a chiropractor, I hear many different stories about the health challenges that people face. Some describe symptoms like pain, muscle tension and headaches. Others talk about muscle strains, pinched nerves or sciatica. So many different conditions, and yet there is one thing in common with all of them. It’s escalating tension. But not just the muscle tension that many think of. Did you know that tension gets stored in our bones, joints and nervous system? When we face a stressful situation and are unable to resolve it in the moment, the thoughts and emotions get stored not just in our brain but also in our muscles, bones, nerves and other tissues. When someone is telling me about their symptoms be it pain, numbness, weakness or stiffness, I can usually trace it back to stored tension. Why is tension such an important factor in pain and other symptoms? Tension goes hand in hand with relaxation. We need both. Imagine the simple movement of bending your elbow. As your bicep muscle shortens and tenses up, the opposing tricep muscle must relax and lengthen. This is true when looking at our body as a whole. Tension and relaxation are different sides of the same coin and our bodies function best when a balance is maintained between both. When tension escalates, our bodies resort to storing the tension away in bones, muscles, nerves and other tissues. When tension goes up, pain and other symptoms predictably increase to match. Even more, accumulating tension in our bodies is much like adding straws to the camel’s back. If we keep adding tension to our bodies like straws to the camel’s back, tissues will ultimately weaken, strain and tear. Now that sounds like a painful situation! In short, pain and many other symptoms are often rooted in a buildup of tension. If you’re experiencing symptoms like pain, stiffness or weakness, you might want to find out how much tension you’re holding. Yours in health, Dr....
