Preparing for a Refresh

(Image: ‘fresh fruit’ by adamr / FreeDigitalPhotos.net) There was a time a few years ago when I was really keen on detoxes and explored and tried all sorts. This has been less so in recent times. To be honest, there’s a part of me that views a detox as a deprivation and I fear withdrawal symptoms – not just headaches, potential nausea and general fatigue, but even angst and restlessness at not allowing myself to reach out for my old standbys of comfort. This April, I’m going to give it another go alongside my Source community. It’s springtime, a natural time to clean out and we’re taking a new approach. No deprivation model here, it’s actually about nourishment and there’s a lot of information available in-office and on the web, including some great talks we’re hosting in April. In the meantime, I’d love to share my approach on getting started. So first, I like (need) to take a few weeks to prepare, and I pick a time period where my schedule is relatively light or where there aren’t too many outings planned. For us, this is going to be the week of April 15th. I begin to prepare myself mentally with the gentle reminders that we (the whole mind-body-spirit that composes this ‘Lana’ thing) are going to be undergoing a detox. This is a voluntary thing and the result is going to be positive. This is something we all want and it is a time-limited thing. We can totally do this. I also create some intentions around what I would like to achieve – this will consist of physical intentions (like sleep better, feel more energized, improve my skin’s glow, and sure, drop a few pounds 😛 ) and also something more spiritual & emotional (I would like to gain more peace, feel more love, and gain greater clarity around decision-making). The next piece is some practical planning around what I’m going to need. What is the detox itself going to consist of? What are the foods and equipment I’m going to need to have in place to make this work? Generally for me, I know that I need to have food and plans set for the next 2 days ahead; this also means setting aside time in my calendar every day (or other) to grocery shop and plan for the 2 days after that. And so on for the duration of the cleanse. Primarily, I will eat lots of raw food, say good bye to sugar, gluten, dairy, coffee, all fried and processed foods and add lots of water, herbal teas, seaweed, and supplements. Here I also consider my Achilles foods – coffee, chocolate (and sweets in general) and bread. What is the game plan for dealing with these cravings? In my nourishing cleanse, I’m going to drink green tea so that will provide me with a caffeine fix but do it with healthy antioxidant goodness (In most, if not every cleanse, we eliminate caffeine). For my sweet tooth, I’ll turn to fruit or a banana smoothie. For bread, I may just try out a gluten-free bread. Depending on the type of detox you take on, there may be satisfying ways of taking the sting out. The truth is, there is a lot of healthy culinary satisfaction available that I’m not even aware of. This is the fun part. I’ve checked out some books and have found some recipes I’m really eager to try. Our bodies thrive on proper nourishment. It’s never my body that craves junk food, is it? No! Making Friends with Salad

It’s easy to get caught up in the challenges and difficulties in eating well all the time. Really though, the creative opportunities are abundant and all around! Take salad days, for instance, an easy and enjoyable way I’ve found to get my raw veggie fix for the day. The ingredients are as follows: find one (or more) participating co-worker(s) and choose the salad day of the week. On that day, each person brings in a couple of items to toss into the communal salad. Take turns assembling or do it together. The result: a delicious and always unique creation. What I have discovered in doing this: – Lunch is always huge, delicious, and cheap – The salad is always different, allowing for variety & satisfaction – It’s really easy to grab a few items to bring in the morning than to have a prepared lunch to take – I am encouraged to eat better the other days – I’m held accountable to eating well because someone else is counting on me for their lunch too – It’s a lot of fun and there is a lot of camaraderie in doing this with other people – I get new ideas for different salads – It’s contagious – other people want to join in or create their own salad day alliances How easy is it? The options are endless! I usually bring what I have in the fridge or interesting leftovers. 4 items or so apiece works nicely. Some handy ingredients, beyond the typical lettuce, mixed greens, spinach, cukes, tomatoes, could be (and have been): – Leftover roasted/grilled vegetables – Can of beans – I like chickpeas, romano, black or a combination – Goat’s or any other kind of cheese – Nuts & seeds – hemp hearts? Sunflower seeds? Tasty! – Sprouts – many possibilities here: radish, alfalfa, broccoli, mung bean, etc. – Grilled tempeh or tofu cubes – Olives – Avocado – Hard-boiled egg (or other animal protein, if you are so inclined) – Cooked quinoa or other grain The possibilities are many and a lot of fun. We’ve had some odd salad combinations here but they were all great. It’s usually easy enough to keep a bottle of lovely olive oil (unrefined, cold-pressed please) or sesame and balsamic (or apple cider) vinegar & salt & pepper. You could easily keep a bottle of ready-made salad dressing around but playing with your own concoction is much tastier. I really enjoy adding a tasty fat to my salad. Avocado and lemon juice provide a really nice combination. Or try my new favourite: tahini dressing! Mix tahini, fresh lemon juice, salt & pepper, a minced clove of garlic and a dash of sweetener (I like agave or maple syrup). Taste and adjust as to desired consistency and taste. New Holiday Rituals

The prospect of holidays can be dismal for some of us. Especially when we’ve lost someone near and dear to us. This is the situation facing my family and I as we head into December without mom. Our holiday season starts on December 19th which marks the day of the family’s patron saint, St. Nicholas (following the Julian calendar) and it continues through until Christmas Day on January 7th (One could count it even further to the new year marked on the 14th of January). Quite honestly , the holidays always ran a tad overlong for me. I did, however, enjoy cooking with mom and preparing the feast for St. Nicholas as it was a (mostly – fish being permitted) vegan occasion. It began with brainstorming what we wanted to cook as in later years she was quite open to trying new dishes (yay!) instead of simply eliminating the meat and dairy from the usual fare (thereby eliciting complaints and feelings of deprivation from the carnivorous food critics in the clan). Think baked beans and cabbage rolls minus the greasy pork that most claimed was the necessary, and missing, piece. Last year, mom and I left dad at home and did all of our grocery shopping, just the two of us. And for the first time, because she was in pain, she allowed me to do much of the work. When it came time for the meal, she actually sat down with all who had come to join us. This was a first, that she didn’t hover and keep filling plates, and keep working to feed all of her guests. It’s how we all saw that she really wasn’t doing well and that in likelihood she wouldn’t be around next year. And here we are. As I spent the time with her last year, I felt this would be the last time for us and I felt driven to promise silently that I would continue this tradition of cooking on this day and honouring the spirit of her patron saint, whose spirit is one of spreading kindness and generosity. And so, facing the holidays without her, I feel the need to create new rituals to honour and remember her. My sisters and I will gather and craft a simple yet nourishing and inspired meal. We’ll probably make the baked beans, maybe there will be some fish. The key piece will be the cabbage rolls. Mom was an intuitive cook and liked to be spontaneous and in doing so was capable of crafting some truly delicious dishes (and then never be able to recreate them because she couldn’t remember all that had gone into them!). In that spirit, the cabbage rolls will be made and brought to Source Centre to share with all who come. Alongside some other nibbles, apple cider and more. I hope you will be able to join us and share a toast this holiday...

On Loving the Cold!

(Image: “winter landscape” by dan / FreeDigitalPhotos.net) As the temperature begins to drop and the days get darker, I begin to hear a lot of complaints about the cold weather and impending winter. Granted, it’s often coming out of my mouth, however certainly not exclusively so. ..( You know who you are. And what are we doing living in Canada anyway if we have a problem with winter ;)) In the spirit of gratitude that we aim to cultivate and grow every day, here are some things that I enjoy about these cooler seasons that I like to remember, and would like to share (so you can remind me when I go off again!): *Persimmons are back, cheap and delicious. If you missed it last year, here is my ode to this delicious fruit. *Now is truly the best time to eat spicy foods. I take this time to enjoy hot spiciness on most everything. Warms you up right from the inside and keeps your nasal passages clear. *Drinking tea especially brewing homemade chai tea right on the stovetop. The intoxicating scent of ginger, cloves, cinnamon, cardamom wafting through the house is heavenly. Apple cider and mulled wine is nice too! And what about soup and freshly baked bread? There’s nothing like making your own food and feeling the heat and enjoying the anticipation of a hot, delicious, nourishing meal. Mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm! Lest you think all that I enjoy about fall and winter is food, let me tell you about: *Bundling up in the long, precious scarf my mom lovingly knit me, knowing that she spent many hours and put so much care into it to keep me warm. *Snowy nights and the crisp air. How beautiful and peaceful! Consider a winter morning after a snowfall and the beauty of the snow draped branches. *How about slip-sliding on the sidewalk? Snowball fights with friends? One is never too old to toboggan and just get totally dunked and covered in snow, not caring about being dry or dignified.  What of the beauty of rosy cheeks? *How about curling around a fireplace and feeling its light and warmth? How about holidays and parties and red wine and cheese trays (oh, guilty pleasures!)? *Cuddling under warm covers and watching a movie or reading a great book.   I feel the winter is a great time to commit to a lengthy classic. This is how I finally read War and Peace (particularly recommended for those who complain about winter and the cold – get a taste of Russian winter as experienced by the unknowing  troops of Napoleon! BRRRRRR!!!). *How about skiing and snowboarding and skating and hot chocolate?   *How about trying something new? A friend of mine was just talking about her plans to go dog-sledding in Algonquin Park this winter for the second time. She said it was such a rush… You in? How are you making this fall/winter...

We feel that way too, very blessed to be here and to share our lives with the wonderful people who step through our door. It is important to us to keep a sacred, beautiful and nurturing space.  Work is where most of us spend a good, if not the better, chunk of our waking life. If we don’t enjoy being at work, it can take a toll on our health and well-being. Some aspects of our job are going to be unchangeable, however, much of our experience can improve with some simple beautification steps. I believe the trick is to engage our senses in appealing ways. It’s a part of why it feels great to be at Source Centre (click here for pictures of our space). We actively work to bring in and share what’s meaningful and beautiful to us. Here are some ideas: Plants or fresh flowers. Having something alive, vibrant and colourful can do wonders for lifting spirits (and cleaning the air). There are also so many varieties to choose from that it needn’t be too difficult to find one that can grow in whatever setting you find yourself in. Sure, they need to be watered but it’s not as often as you might think and, anyway, what better reason to take a break and a stretch? Pictures. It’s fairly common to see family photos on or around our desks but I say go beyond! (especially if you find that family is in itself a source of stress!) How about pictures of beautiful landscapes or places you’ve visited that have a particular resonance for you? How about inspirational quotes where you can see them? Don’t forget to change the pictures every so often so that you continue to notice them and be inspired or transported. Meaningful objects. This could be treasured gifts or natural items such as unique rocks. Potpourri or essential oils for the scent. Do you have a favourite? Lavender is very relaxing and peppermint can be invigorating. A few drops on a handkerchief, inhale, and you’re set. Try it in place of an afternoon coffee or sugar fix. Crystals. They are beautiful and can diffuse negative energy.  You can’t go wrong with finding a crystal that “speaks” to you. Alternatively, there are many that are great at diffusing negative energy: black tourmaline, amethyst or rose quartz are just a few examples.  Music or soothing sounds. This one may be the most difficult to implement depending on your work set-up but you never know! If the sounds are soothing enough – think gentle piano or natural rushing water sounds – it may be possible that your neighbours don’t notice or that it subconsciously changes behaviour in a positive way. Or maybe you can get away with an ipod now and then. Finding music or sounds that uplift and inspire can work wonders in improving mood and regulating blood pressure. Got any ideas or things you use?
