Dance, Dance, Dance

This is the title of one of my favorite songs by Steve Miller Band.  Here are the opening lyrics: My grandpa, he’s 95 And he keeps on dancin’ He’s still alive My grandma, she’s 92 She loves to dance And sing some, too I don’t know, but I’ve been told If you keep on dancing You’ll never grow old… I agree!  I love to dance (and sing some too)! Dancing has been a significant part of my life ever since I was a teenager.  I have never had any formal training in dance and I don’t think it is at all necessary to develop a love of dance and enjoy the many benefits. Why do I love to dance?  I love music and I love allowing it to move me and my body.  I love to dance in community and enjoy celebrating life through music and dancing.  I love to be expressive and creative with my movements and try different moves and rhythms out.  I love how dancing brings me into my body and into the present moment.  I love that every person, at any age, with any ability can be included in dance. I love how it is a way to bring people together.  I love that I get to exercise my body while I am having fun and don’t even feel like I am “working out”. As a chiropractor, I think dance is a wonderful way to enhance health and wellbeing.  I often recommend dance as a form of exercise, whether in dance classes, events, parties, or dancing at home (this is what I do a lot of). I especially appreciate free movements when it comes to dancing.  What we know about the body is that it appreciates random, non-repetitive movements that cause many different muscles, large and small, to be firing and this helps our joints and spines be in healthy alignment.  Free, or ecstatic, dance is a way to move the body without any structured or choreographed movements. Get into Your Groove with a Clear Day!

On Saturday, November 23 we are co-hosting a full day healing intensive event called a Clear Day.  Clear Days are the most transformative and powerful healing events I have ever been a part of and an incredible opportunity to bust through old patterns and step into something new.  Having hosted 7 Clear Days to now, I am still amazed, inspired and thrilled about what happens for people at the event and beyond. Clear Days happen at a location external to our regular office environment.  We spend a full day in a community of like minded, open hearted people focused on healing and growth.  Doing healing work in community is a powerful way to create growth, far faster than we can do one-on-one.  We share both consciously and unconsciously with others in our healing process; just think about how you often get more out of doing a group yoga class, meditation, or exercise. Clear Days are inspired by the work of Dr. Donald Epstein who gave us the wonderful gift of the chiropractic technique called Network Spinal Analysis and the body/breath technique called Somato Respiratory Integration (SRI).  At Clear Days we have 3 “entrainment” sessions interspersed with SRI and other body centered workshops to enhance the process and add to the learning.   An “entrainment” is the word we use for the chiropractic care we provide which is designed to help your body connect and release it’s own tension and generate alignment and self healing.  At the upcoming Clear Day we will have 5 chiropractors working at once during the entrainment session with up to 15 people on the tables at once.  The group effect of doing this entrainment together provides a powerful synergy to help people create healing and learning that is not available day to do in the office. Throughout the day we will go on a journey through the “Seasons of Wellbeing”.  Our first entrainment focuses on the strategies of the season of “Discover”, where we can be authentic with ourselves, learn where we may be running from pain or problems in our lives and we get more connected to our bodies and emotions.  In the second entrainment we embrace the season of “Transform” where we can claim our personal power, commit to making changes in our lives and move into action.  The final entrainment embodies the season of “Awaken” where we move into heart space and experience expansiveness, gratitude, joy, and acceptance to inspire us to be all that we can be in our lives. The Intelligence Within

What happens when you have a gut feeling about something and you do not listen to what your body is trying to tell you? What happens when you do listen? I find when I can follow my gut, or my heart, that life flows with ease and good things come to me. In Chiropractic Philosophy one of our main tenets is that in each one of us there is an innate intelligence governing all function within our bodies and sending us messages to guide us in our lives. These “gut feelings” that we have are messages sent to us by our innate intelligence which is trying to get us to listen. In our society, due to the large volumes of information we deal with on a daily basis, we often spend a lot of time in our heads processing and analyzing our situation. We use our educated mind to make choices for ourselves and decide the paths we are going to take in our minds based on our previous life experience. Our educated mind was a blank slate when we were born and we have been accumulating knowledge and information to “educate” ourselves and survive in our lives. Our educated mind is finite and shaped by our personal experiences. On the other hand, our innate mind, is infinite and all knowing. When we can bypass our educated mind to be quiet and listen to our innate intelligence it will reveal the wisdom to us and guide us in our lives. This is not an easy task however, and it is a lifelong journey for those who choose. However, simply making the choice to become aware of your innate intelligence will make a profound difference in your ability to hear what it has to say. How can you connect more deeply to your innate intelligence? The first step is to become aware of your present state? So how do you know if you are connected to your innate intelligence, or to your heart? Here are 3 different areas to look at to help you know if you are connected. 1) How are you feeling?At any time you can check in to your emotional state. It is simple, when you are experiencing positive, joyful emotions, you know you are connected. If you are feeling negative, unhappy emotions, then you know you are not connected. 2) How are your energy levels?When your energy levels are abundant you are connected; when you have low energy you are not connected and are not following your heart. 3) What kind of language are you using?The type of language you are using is a reflection of your internal state. Using words like “I choose to…”, “I love to…”, “I want to…”, are signs that you are connected and doing things that come from your innate intelligence and are an expression of who you are. Words like “I have to…”, “I should…”, and “I need to…” are less connected expressions that imply that you are doing things that are not coming from your personal self-expression. These are all things that you can be aware of throughout your day and check in on a regular basis. Resolution vs Evolution

New Year’s Resolutions can be a fantastic way to create change for some people. For the almost 90% of people that are not successful with such resolutions, I would like to offer some insight. Making any type of change can be challenging because there are many forces acting upon us that have the potential to direct our freedom of choice. In life there are internal and external forces. If we think of this as a ship sailing on the sea, there are forces that affect the course the ship will take. The captain of the ship can steer the ship in any direction that she/he chooses, she/he is the internal force that sets the course. External forces such as the waves and the wind have the potential to push the ship off course. We may not be aware that external forces are often driving the choices that we make in our lives. External forces can be overwhelming and sometimes overpower our internal drive and motivation, especially if our internal forces are not developed enough to stay on course.   When we are connected to our bodies and their innate wisdom, the external forces in our lives have less effect on our direction and choices. I believe that connecting with our inborn intelligence is the most powerful source of change. When we connect more deeply with ourselves our body can help us to deal with external forces and guide us in our life choices. When we renew connection, we have the internal motivation to more easily and naturally make changes to move towards greater health and wellbeing.   This year if you make a resolution consider the source of your motivation. Are you simply making a resolution because you think you should (external force), or is it deeply motivated from within (internal force)? Instead of making a huge resolution that you know you can’t keep consider making a resolution that will help you connect to your body and the intelligence within. Any small change that you make can have a huge affect on your wellbeing. Consider that if the captain changes the course of her/his ship by only one degree, across the span of an ocean, she/he could end up on a completely different continent.   Whatever you choose this New Year, devise a plan with realistic and achievable goals. Be gentle with yourself and remember that you are human like the rest of us. Consider making choices that will create evolution for yourself to create lasting and sustainable change.  There are endless ways that we can access the potential inside of us and facilitate the flow of energy and information through the body. When It Rains It Pours

I have personally been dealing with a lot of potentially stressful challenges  lately.  Now, the reason I say “potentially” is because nothing is actually stressful until it is perceived by the nervous system as stress.  That said, I have also noticed that many of my clients and friends have been experiencing an abundance of potential stressors recently.    The expression “when it rains it pours” comes to mind in these situations.  It is interesting how this can often be the case in our lives where challenges are concerned.  They can often pile up leaving us feeling overwhelmed, helpless, anxious or drained of energy.  The cumulative effect of compounding experiences can have a significant impact on our health and wellbeing and on our ability to manage our stress  When I have a lot to deal with, I am especially grateful to be able to call upon the strategies I have learned in my body and life through my process of healing.     What I know about stress in the body is that if we want to be able to handle stress and actually process and learn from our experience of it, we need to create an environment of peace within the body.  When the body is at ease then it has the chance to be able to process stress.  If the body is in a state of overwhelm, this capacity is significantly diminished.  It is also very difficult to process things with only the mind.  When we can use the whole bodymind to process we have much more capacity.  This is why choosing actions to help us move into our bodies at times like these are especially valuable.   When I am faced with a lot of potential stress, it is vital for me to choose actions that will help me stay present and connected to myself and my body, which takes me out of thinking and worrying and into feeling and processing.  Here are some strategies I use for connecting with my body and processing potential stressors:    Increase my frequency of Network Chiropractic Entrainments Increase my frequency of Somato Respiratory Integration Exercises Doing whatever actions are necessary to deal with the practicality of my situation(s) Practice other body centered techniques I have learned (i.e. meditation, focusing, body scan, pelvic awareness, grounding) Practicing faith, trust and surrender Exercise Yoga, especially restorative yoga Journaling Spending time in nature Connecting with family and friends and sharing my situation and feelings with them Dancing Playing guitar Doing anything creative Getting good rest Eating clean and healthy food   Certainly, there can be times when I am so overwhelmed that I feel like I don’t have access to any strategies.  This is when it is the most difficult to take actions like I am suggesting above because when we are in overwhelm, or fight or flight, we do not think clearly.  However, when I choose to utilize my strategies I am more able to harness the pouring rain and use it to nourish my healing process to allow myself to...
