One-on-one talk therapy can help a person cope with feelings of
unhappiness, sadness, or depression, anxiety/fear, and anger that
may stem from traumatic experiences, life passages (e.g., separation/divorce,
career change), adjustment difficulties (e.g., illness/disability,
grief or loss, sexuality issues, relationship problems, or struggles
with self-confidence and self-esteem. Psychological treatment
can also help an individual develop skills to deal with physical
health concerns such as chronic pain and insomnia and better manage
the effects of stress in daily life.
A person may also choose to engage in psychotherapy to augment
his or her personal growth. By gaining a deeper understanding
of ourselves, learning to harness our inner psychological resources,
and working through possible underlying issues that keep us “stuck”,
we can increase our sense of psychological wholeness and well-being
and become more capable of realizing our personal life goals.
